CLSS-HC Study Tool
Certified Life Safety Specialist in Health Care — based on 2012 NFPA 101
CLSS-HC Exam Prep
Based on the 2012 edition of NFPA 101, Life Safety Code — the official body of knowledge for the CLSS-HC certification exam. Questions are weighted by domain to match the actual exam blueprint.
Written against 2012 NFPA 101. That is the edition CMS still enforces for Medicare/Medicaid-certified health care occupancies, and the one the exam is built on — even where your state fire marshal has adopted a newer edition for everything else in the building. Where a requirement changed between editions, the question names the condition rather than leaving you to guess.
Exam Blueprint (6 Domains)
Your first try on this exam adds a flat +25. Harder credentials pay more — the full ladder runs Foundation → Technician → Professional → Flagship.
Certified Life Safety Specialist — Healthcare (CLSS-HC)
NFPA's specialist credential for healthcare life safety. Aligned with CMS-enforced NFPA 101 (2012). Open-book exam on NFPA 101 (2012) only — candidate must obtain the standard for study AND bring it to the exam room. Common for healthcare consultants, fire-protection PEs working in hospitals, and ASHE professionals adding to a CHFM.
Pro tip from test-takers: Focus on core chapters 4, 7, 8, 9 and healthcare chapters 18 & 19. Know your travel distances, corridor widths, smoke compartment sizes, and suite limitations by heart. Tab and highlight your NFPA 101 book — the questions are open book but time-pressured.
