Fire Door Inspection

DO ✅

Verify label is intact and legible
Check door closes and latches fully
Confirm self-closer works from any position
Verify clearance: max 3/4" bottom, 1/8" sides
Ensure no field modifications
Check glazing is fire-rated and intact
Verify hardware is fire-rated
Inspect frame and hinges for damage

DON'T ❌

Prop open with wedges or blocks
Paint over the fire rating label
Install non-rated hardware
Remove self-closing device
Block with furniture or equipment
Drill holes in the door or frame
Disable magnetic holder wiring
Ignore gaps exceeding code limits

Remove patients and visitors from immediate danger

Pull the nearest fire alarm pull station and call the operator

Close all doors to contain fire and smoke

EXTINGUISH

Extinguish small fires with a portable extinguisher if safe

Remember: Defend-in-place first. Evacuate only as a last resort in healthcare.

Violations

  • Boxes stacked too high
  • Shelving within 18"
  • Signs or banners
  • Hanging decorations
  • Ductwork additions

Compliance

  • Mark clearance on walls
  • Train warehouse staff

  • Report violations immediately
  • Include in orientation
