PASS β€” How to Use a Fire Extinguisher

Reference: NFPA 10 β€” Portable Fire Extinguishers

Key Talking Points

  • P β€” PULL the pin. This unlocks the operating lever. Some extinguishers have a tamper seal that breaks when you pull.
  • A β€” AIM low. Point the nozzle or hose at the base of the fire, not at the flames. Hitting the base cuts off the fuel source.
  • S β€” SQUEEZE the handle. This releases the extinguishing agent. Use a controlled, steady squeeze.
  • S β€” SWEEP from side to side at the base of the fire until it appears out. Watch for re-ignition and be ready to repeat.
  • Most portable extinguishers discharge for only 10-20 seconds. Know your extinguisher type (ABC, CO2, K-class) and what fires it covers.

DO

  • Aim at the base of the fire, not the flames
  • Keep your back to an exit so you can escape if the fire grows
  • Make sure someone has called 911 before you attempt to fight the fire
  • Only fight a fire that is small and contained (trash can size or smaller)
  • Check that your extinguisher gauge is in the green zone before you need it

DON'T

  • Fight a fire larger than a trash can β€” evacuate instead
  • Use water on a grease fire or an electrical fire
  • Turn your back on a fire, even if it appears extinguished
  • Block your only exit route while fighting the fire
  • Attempt to use an extinguisher you have not been trained on

Discussion Questions

  1. Where is the nearest fire extinguisher to your workstation? What type is it?
  2. At what point should you stop fighting a fire and evacuate?
  3. Has anyone here ever had to use a fire extinguisher? What happened?
