Hot Work Fire Watch β Before, During, After
Reference: NFPA 51B / OSHA 1910.252
Key Talking Points
- Hot work (welding, cutting, brazing, grinding) is a leading cause of workplace fires. A dedicated fire watch is required whenever hot work is performed outside a designated shop.
- BEFORE: A hot work permit must be issued. The area within 35 feet must be cleared of combustibles or they must be covered with fire-resistant blankets. A fire extinguisher (minimum 2A:10B:C) must be within arm's reach of the fire watch.
- DURING: The fire watch person must remain at the work site with no other duties. Their sole job is to watch for sparks, smoldering material, and fire. They must have a clear means of sounding an alarm.
- AFTER: The fire watch must continue for at least 30 minutes after hot work is complete. Sparks and slag can smolder for extended periods before igniting combustibles. Some facilities require 60 minutes.
- The fire watch person must be trained in extinguisher use and know how to activate the building fire alarm. They are not the person doing the hot work β it is a separate, dedicated role.
DO
- Obtain a signed hot work permit before any work begins
- Station a trained fire watch with a charged extinguisher at the work site
- Maintain the fire watch for at least 30 minutes after work is complete
- Clear or cover all combustibles within 35 feet of the hot work
- Check above, below, and behind walls β sparks travel through openings
DON'T
- Assign the fire watch any other duties during the watch period
- Allow the hot work operator to serve as their own fire watch
- Skip the post-work watch because the area "looks fine"
- Perform hot work near sprinkler risers or fire alarm devices without notifying the alarm monitoring company
- Leave the area unmonitored if you need to step away β get a relief
Discussion Questions
- Who is authorized to issue hot work permits in our facility? Where are the permits kept?
- Why is the 30-minute post-work watch so important, even if you don't see any sparks?
- What would you do if you discovered a smoldering fire during your fire watch?
