Employer’s part
Your hospital finishes the job on your unit: your manager or the safety officer shows you the nearest pull stations, extinguishers, smoke barrier doors and medical gas zone valves, walks your evacuation route, explains your role in the fire safety plan, and records it.
Repeat it
Every year. Hospitals instruct staff periodically on their duties under the fire safety plan (NFPA 101 19.7.1.2), and OSHA requires extinguisher education at hire and at least annually (1910.157(g)(2)).

When you finish, you'll be able to

  • Explain why hospitals defend in place and how smoke compartments protect patients
  • Carry out RACE: rescue, raise the alarm with the code phrase and pull station, contain by closing doors, extinguish or evacuate
  • Move patients horizontally to the next smoke compartment when the plan calls for it
  • Decide when a fire is small enough to fight, and use an extinguisher with PASS
  • Handle oxygen safely and recognize the three ingredients of a surgical fire
  • Know what fire drills require and how interim life safety measures affect your unit
How this course works · 1-minute read
Lessons are slides
Use Back / Next or the ← → arrow keys. The gold bar above each slide jumps to any slide, and marks the Quick Checks before you reach them.
Quick Checks
20 short questions sit inside the lessons. Pick an answer and the right one and the explanation appear straight away. They are practice — nothing is recorded.
Every answer has a source
Citation cards name the regulation or standard behind a slide; OSHA and EPA citations open the official text. Nothing comes into this exam room, so the course flags what to memorize.
Your place is saved
Sign in and the course remembers the slide you stopped on. A lesson is marked done when you press Mark lesson complete on its last slide — you can unmark it to study it again.
Then the final and your employer
A 12-question final assessment (70% to pass) unlocks the certificate with your contact hours. Then print the practical checkoff: your employer’s competent person covers your site and checks you hands-on.
