3Pre-Work Safety Verification — NFPA 51B §5.4

1.Sprinkler system in-service and not impaired
2.Fire extinguisher (rated 2-A:20-B:C minimum) within 30 ft
3.Combustible material within 35 ft removed or shielded (metal blankets, fire-resistant tarps)
4.Floor swept clean of combustible residue
5.Combustible floor wetted down or covered with non-combustible material
6.Walls and ceilings of non-combustible construction or shielded
7.Cracks, wall openings, and floor openings sealed to prevent sparks from reaching hidden areas
8.Enclosed equipment cleaned of combustibles and purged (tanks, vessels, pipes)
9.Ducts and conveyors that might carry sparks to distant combustibles protected or shut down
10.Atmospheric gas test completed (if required) — results within safe limits
11.Hot work equipment in good repair — cables, hoses, torches, regulators inspected
12.Welding/cutting operator trained and qualified
13.Fire watch assigned and briefed on procedures
14.Means of sounding fire alarm available (phone, radio, manual pull station)

4Fire Watch Requirements

NFPA 51B §5.5: Fire watch is required during hot work and for a minimum of 60 minutes after work stops. Some AHJs (FM Global, many hospitals) require up to 3 hours at high-hazard locations.
